GUY WIRE SUPPORTED STACKS Flare stacks supported by guy wires make optimum use of the compression strength of the pipe they are constructed from. Guy wires are the most economical method for allowing smaller diameter pipe stacks to stand under the heaviest weather conditions. Guy wire supported stacks do require more maintenance than any other type of stack. Wires must be maintained through regular cleaning and oiling to prevent the buildup of dirt and dust which can penetrate the wire. When the wires are not cleaned dirt particles can work between the wire strands then cut through them lessening the strength of the support wires. The advantages of guy wire supported stacks are: Guy Wire supported structures are much less costly in terms of manufacture, design, and installation. They are much faster to install, as well as significantly lighter. With decreased weight, tremendous savings can be found by using smaller cranes for installation. Less crane time on site also allows for less costly installation. Due to the stack being exposed ladders, platforms, and other means of personnel access can be added to allow maintenance to be preformed. There are no structural obstructions to utility lines, steam lines with expansion loops, or secondary flare risers run on the outside of the pipe stack. top
